Itinerary

Depart from Gatineau via Montreal and Quebec City, heading toward New Brunswick through the Témiscouata Valley. A stop in St. Jacques will give you the chance to explore New Brunswick’s magnificent botanical garden. Continue on to Fredericton and check in at the hotel for the night.

Orientation tour of the provincial capital: the Parliament Building, Christ Church Cathedral, the renovated former military quarters, and the University of New Brunswick. Departure for St. Andrews, on the Bay of Fundy. Visit to Kingsbrae Gardens. Departure for Saint John, where you will take an orientation tour: the Old Market, Barbours General Store, the Loyalist House, and the famous natural phenomenon of the Reversible Falls. Check-in at the hotel in Saint John. (B)

After breakfast, you’ll board a ferry that will take you across the Bay of Fundy to Digby (3-hour crossing). Then, you’ll follow in the footsteps of French explorers in Annapolis Royal, where you’ll visit Fort Anne National Historic Site, a former French stronghold. Next, during a guided tour, you’ll explore Port-Royal Settlement, a replica of one of the first European settlements in Canada. In the afternoon, visit the Grand-Pré National Historic Site, where the deportation of the Acadians took place, sending them along the American coast and to Europe. There, you’ll see, among other things, the statue of Evangeline, the heroine of Henry W. Longfellow’s poem. Continue on to Halifax and check in at the hotel for 2 nights. (B)

Guided tour of Halifax, the provincial capital and largest city in the Maritimes: highlights include the provincial legislature, the public gardens, the port facilities, and the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site. You’ll continue your exploration with a trip to Peggy’s Cove, a charming little fishing village on the Atlantic coast with unparalleled scenery, where sky and land meet to the ceaseless sound of waves crashing against the reefs. (B)

Departure for Cape Breton Island. You’ll travel back in time to 1744 as you tour, with a guide, the largest historical reconstruction of a French fortified town in North America: the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site. More than 50 faithfully reconstructed buildings open their doors to you, and characters in period costumes recreate the atmosphere of 18th-century French rule. Check in at your hotel in Sydney for the night. (B)

Departure for Cape Breton Highlands National Park, which is surrounded by the famous Cabot Trail. This spectacular road, which winds along the cliffs and rocky peaks of Cape Breton, offers exceptional panoramic views, making it one of the most breathtaking tourist destinations in Eastern Canada. A few stops along the way will allow you to enjoy the scenery, including the picturesque village of Chéticamp. (B)

Before heading to Prince Edward Island, you’ll visit the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, where you’ll discover the world’s largest collection of artifacts, photographs, and documents related to the famous physicist and inventor of the telephone. You’ll then travel to Charlottetown. Check in at your hotel in Charlottetown for a 2-night stay. (B)

This morning, you’ll take an orientation tour to see, among other sights, the waterfront district, Victoria Park, and St. Dunstan’s Basilica. In the afternoon, explore Canada’s smallest province and Prince Edward Island National Park. Stop in Cavendish, home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the Maritimes. Visit Green Gables, immortalized in the popular novel Anne of Green Gables. Return to Charlottetown. (B)

Cross the Confederation Bridge. In Bouctouche, visit the Pays de la Sagouine. This splendid site recreates the atmosphere of the early 20th century. Colorful characters will immerse you in the daily life that inspired Antonine Maillet’s literary works. Check in at your hotel in Moncton for the night. (B)

You will then head to Hopewell Cape, in the Bay of Fundy, where glacial erosion combined with the world’s strongest and highest tides has carved out what look like flowerpots: a truly unique sight. Continue on to Caraquet, where you will visit the Acadian Heritage Village. Actors in period costumes will bring to life the history and daily life of the Acadians following the deportation from Grand-Pré. Authentic buildings, some dating back to 1770, will easily transport you back in time. Check in at your hotel in Bathurst for the night. (B)

Departure for Edmundston, where you’ll join the Trans-Canada Highway heading toward Quebec City, then arrival in Gatineau in the evening. (B)
